The cold from the ground made Daniel shiver, he lay on his stomach on the edge of the trees above an abandoned farmhouse.

He glanced at Jason next to him. “You should have gone with Tania and the boys. It’s what Aine wanted, Tania needed a friendly face.”

“I think things changed when we were attacked. They knew where we would be.” Jason squinted at the house below. “Anyway, the twins will be safe with Michael and Shauna. Their healers will help Tania. I’m not the most sensitive person and I’m angry. We don’t know where the hybrids have settled so if we do have someone feeding information then they won’t know either.”

Daniel closed his eyes and let the sorrow wash over him. “I should have done more.” He frowned. “Maybe they got lucky.” His stomach churned when he thought of Nyko again.

“No, Finn came prepared. The dark wolves…” He shuddered. “That takes preparation, I don’t think they were expecting you and Rubal.” Jason jerked his head behind him to Rubal. Daniel glanced back, the hybrid still dozed. He was propped up against a tree and had been for about an hour now.

“Do you think we should wake him?” Daniel looked back out over the valley below them.

“Let him keep trying to reach Wren. It’s better than the bad temper and pacing,” Jason grumbled.

“How does that even work?” Daniel started to crawl back from the edge of the overlook and back into the trees. Jason joined him.

“Wren is originally from the Aoibhan pack, we can all connect with each other in dreams.” Jason grabbed his pack and dug through it. He pulled out some beef jerky and moaned. “Damn, I hate this stuff.”

“Stop eating it all then.” Daniel grabbed it off him and chuckled. His smile dropped and he looked at Rubal. “How can he link with Wren?”

“It’s through dreams, Aine and Lachlan can do it. Rubal said they were true mates.” Jason shrugged. “Shifter and hunter remember? Well, you hybrids are half hunter so makes sense that if you mate with someone from the Aoibhan pack you can dream link with them. Same way Lachlan ended up with powers.”

“Don’t even try to explain that to me.” Daniel shook his head. “I still can’t figure out how that happened.”

Jason laughed. “Don’t tell anyone, but I can’t either. Eyolf starts off with his mumbo jumbo stuff and I stop listening. All I know is it’s something we can use so I’ll work with him on it.”

Daniel fell quiet and chewed on the jerky. It was tough to swallow.

“She’ll come around.” Jason nudged him. “She’s been through a lot, and you guys definitely have a connection. You’ve been dreaming of her.”

“Not lately, it feels like when she was first taken. I can feel her faintly but can’t reach her.” Daniel shrugged. “The day we found her, it was like she suddenly cut out. I…I thought she was dead. It was one of the worst moments of my life.”

Jason put his arm around him. “Let’s see how she is when we get back.
